Together Housing receives recognition as Investors in Diversity

Together Housing’s ongoing dedication to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the workplace has been further been recognised by The NCFD.

The Northern housing association was formerly awarded a conditional achievement of the Investors in Diversity (IiD) standard and from May 2024, has gone on to receive the full IiD Silver award.

During a 12-month accreditation process, the organisation displayed a renewed commitment to reinforcing EDI at all levels, supported by the successful roll out of staff support groups, including Culturally Diverse, LGBTQ+ and a Disability Group and the development of a refreshed Diversity and Inclusion strategy.

Together Housing also worked on the development of an EDI steering group and additionally, launched a focused recruitment programme for cohort three of the Board Diversity Program to bring wider representation to boards to ensure meetings are more inclusive.

The accolade is recognised as the national equality standard for organisations to develop an inclusive framework through a bespoke approach, improving Fairness, Respect, Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Engagement (FREDIE) practices in the workplace.

FREDIE principles set a standard for all staff members at Together Housing, underpinning processes such as recruitment, progression, and personal development. These values hold great significance for the housing sector at a time when research shows a general reluctance for staff to disclose protected characteristics.

Of data* submitted by 177 organisations, representing 76% of homes owned by housing associations in England, The National Housing Federation reported characteristics that people were least likely to disclose were religion and sexual orientation – 6.4% of the workforce responded ‘prefer not to say’ when asked about their religion and 6.0% chose not to disclose their sexual orientation.

Emma Tomkinson, Assistant Director for The People Team at Together Housing said: “Creating an inclusive workplace is a lasting challenge which we’re committed to facing head on at Together Housing and we’re delighted to receive such a valued accolade from the NCFD as accredited Investors in Diversity.

“To be recognised for our efforts at this stage is an incredible achievement but there’s still work to be done in our journey towards establishing a more equal, diverse and inclusive workplace as employees and sector professionals. We’re eager to continue this work to make Together Housing a more inclusive place for all.”

The National Centre for Diversity said: “Together Housing Group should be awarded Investors in Diversity for their commitment, from the highest levels of the organisation, to engaging with and embedding FREDIE, and continuing to strengthen their inclusive workplace culture.”
