New ‘Move On’ Homes for Young Residents

Your Housing Group (YHG) has renovated two previously run down properties, to provide ‘move on’ accommodation to young Foyer residents.

Both apartments on St Helen’s Road, Leigh, have now been let to their new tenants.

The properties were acquired by YHG as part of the land deal with Wigan Council for its larger Waterside Point housing development. Formerly a butchers and a post office, the units had not been used for some time and were severely dilapidated and in need of substantial renovation works.

The extensive work was carried out by John Southworth builders and the two commercial units, and two one-bedroom flats are now complete with the new tenants fully moved into their new homes.

One of the lucky residents is 22-year-old Jade, who was previously a resident at YHG’s Coops Foyer in Wigan. Foyers provide supported housing for young people aged 16-25 who, for various reasons, are unable to live at home or are at risk of experiencing homelessness.

Having previously struggled with her mental health Jade had proactively sought out accommodation at the Foyer to safeguard her younger siblings. During her time at Coops Foyer, she has come a long way and is now ready to move on to independent accommodation.

Jade said: “Being at Coops has allowed me to get more confident. It has made me feel safe and able to grow into myself. I just feel supported – it is the best service I’ve ever worked with. This apartment will allow me to have security and stability moving forward with my future, and allow me to progress into employment and other opportunities.”

Through the ‘move on’ accommodation service residents continue to receive support from the team to ensure that they can manage the tenancy independently. Whilst at the Foyer they would have weekly meetings with their project officer as well as budgeting sessions and other support services, the move on service is more hands off, but still provides that support to assist these young adults.

One of the highlights for Jade having her own apartment was that she could have a pet, and she is now the proud owner of Harlow the cat.

Lorraine Donnelly, Development Director for Your Housing Group, said “We are all so pleased for Jade. We are proud to provide a variety of accommodation options that enable our customers to thrive at every stage of life. Our fantastic Foyer accommodation support young people like Jade, who are, for many reasons, unable to live at home. Our Foyer teams work tirelessly with our residents to build confidence and independence to be able to go on and manage their own home independently, so we are delighted to be able to provide these dedicated ‘move on’ apartments. We hope that both residents enjoy their new homes and this exciting next stage of their lives.”
