Karbon Homes strengthens its presence across the North of England

Northern-based housing association Karbon Homes has further strengthened its presence in the North of England with the transfer of ownership and management of 439 homes from South Tyneside Housing Ventures Trust (STHVT).

The transfer will see Karbon provide all maintenance, repairs and housing-related services to customers. In addition, customers will also be able to access a range of additional services provided by Karbon including money and debt advice, employability and digital skills advice, a furniture rental service and access to community grants through the Karbon Community Investment Fund.

It follows extensive consultation with customers and stakeholders in November 2022, which saw overwhelming support for the transfer to Karbon to take place.

Paul Fiddaman, Chief Executive of Karbon Homes, said: “We are delighted to welcome customers from South Tyneside Ventures Trust to the Karbon family. The transfer enables us to provide services to even more customers and generate greater capacity to invest in their homes. We are really excited to work closely with the local community and build strong foundations for more people.”

Set up as an independent registered provider in 2013, STHVT provided affordable rented housing including housing for the over 55s and for people living with disabilities. Services to customers were provided by South Tyneside Homes.

South Tyneside Council provided a loan to STHVT to build and purchase 400 additional high-quality affordable homes across the Borough. As part of the transfer of engagements, South Tyneside Council’s Cabinet approved the transfer of the loan from STHVT to Karbon Homes.

The transfer, was legally completed on Monday 17 July 2023, enables Karbon to deliver services to even more customers but also strengthen its presence in South Tyneside where it already owns and manages over 1,200 homes.

As part of the agreement, one member of staff has transferred to Karbon and all services will continue to be provided by Karbon.

Dawn Keightley, Managing Director of South Tyneside Housing Ventures Trust, said: “Our focus has always been ensuring the long-term delivery of high-quality services to customers. After careful consideration and listening to feedback from our customers, the Board agreed to transfer all of its properties to Karbon Homes. Our priority has also been to maintain customers’ homes to a good standard now and in the future and we are assured that Karbon has the financial capability to do that.”
