Housing Executive Awards 2026 – What Does a Winning Affordable Housing Development Look Like?

With the 2026 Housing Executive Awards getting ever closer, we’re running through exactly what the judges will be keeping an eye out for in each category. The deadline for submissions is 30th June, and you can find all awards criteria and nomination forms on our website.

Affordable housing development sits at the core of what the social housing sector exists to do. With demand for affordable homes continuing to outpace supply across much of the country, the developments that make a real difference are those that go beyond simply delivering units — bringing with them lasting social, economic and environmental benefits for the communities they are built in.

Nominations for Best Affordable Housing Development should show evidence of:

  • High quality design and build standards
  • A clear and positive impact on the surrounding community
  • Innovative approaches to delivering affordable homes, including use of sustainable materials or methods
  • Evidence of partnership working and collaboration with local stakeholders
  • How the development meets the specific housing needs of the local area

Last year, the award went to the West Vale Regeneration project by First Choice Homes Oldham, which transformed a site formerly occupied by two outdated 1970s tower blocks into 88 high-quality, sustainable homes at a cost of £20 million. The project impressed judges with its community-first approach and the long-term social and environmental benefits it delivered to the area. Highly Commended went to Luxborough Street by ECD Architects, Wates and Westminster Council, delivering 14 dual-aspect homes and a community-use space in central London, and Jubilee Square — a £64 million regeneration project by Morgan Sindall and Watford Community Homes that transformed a run-down city centre site into 93 affordable properties alongside commercial space and communal gardens.

The judges this year will be looking for another development that demonstrates what affordable housing can achieve when it is approached with ambition and care. If you know of a project that fits that description, head to our website and nominate before the 30th June deadline.
