EWI: Why Stone Wool is a Safe and Sound Choice

EWI: Why Stone Wool is a Safe and Sound Choice

Emissions reduction and energy efficiency are high on the UK agenda, with legally binding targets to reduce carbon emissions by 80% already in force for 2050. As more than one-quarter of all carbon emissions come from the UK’s housing stock, attention quickly turns to how home energy efficiency can be improved, and fuel poverty reduced. Will Wigfield, Product Manager at ROCKWOOL UK, explains how renovating social housing with stone wool external wall insulation (EWI) could transform energy ratings for homes, as well as enhance the over all living environment for tenants.

The built environment contributes to around 40% of the UK’s total final energy consumption (UK Green Building Council) , with the country’s housing ailing a quarter of these carbon emissions (Inside Housing). Moreover, the social housing sector is responsible for 17% of all UK stock (UK Parliament). As such, energy efficiency improvements to these homes could not only benefit the UK’s carbon footprint but also have the potential to drive social regeneration.

Insulating performance…
While housing association homes are typically considered as more energy efficient(Inside Housing) , it has also been said that the social housing sector has the opportunity to lead the way in the development of energy efficient housing.
With that in mind, one of the most effective ways to make a home more energy efficient, and reduce the risk of fuel-poor homes, is to clad the exterior walls with an EWI system. EWI systems are used to extend the useful life of buildings whilst also improving energy efficiency in a more cost effective way.
EWI is suitable for use with many external wall types, making it a practical choice for improving the overall energy efficiency of a home with minimal disruption and well-documented thermal benefits. In simple terms, EWI systems typically retrofit an insulation layer to the outer side of the building and then apply an aesthetic render on top. This build-up has been proven to bring about significant reductions in emissions and energy consumption (Understanding Best Practice in Deploying External SolidWall Insulation in the UK, UCL).
The natural choice
A fundamental priority for social housing is ensuring the safety and security of tenants. Although energy efficiency is the driving force behind upgrading housing specification, consideration must be given to fire safety and noncombustible insulation offers the greatest protection.
Achieving Euroclass A1, stone wool can withstand temperatures in excess of 1000°C – meaning that it will not contribute to fire spread, instilling confidence in performance and safeguarding tenants.
Within densely populated social housing estates, noise from external sources is a common cause of disturbance for tenants. This can be mitigated by using stone wool for EWI energy improvements as it delivers additional community benefits by also providing sound reduction.
When applied as part of a rendered insulation system to various wall types, stone wool insulation has been shown through laboratory testing to increase the sound reduction performance, Rw – in some cases by up to 8 dB. This is because the multi-directional strands of stone wool absorb sound waves and reduce the propagation of external noise, offering a more peaceful living environment for tenants.
The focus on upgrading housing stock across the UK to be more energy efficient is being driven by climate targets and a need to reduce fuel poor homes. However, by specifying an EWI system that uses stone wool insulation, the social housing sector also has the potential to improve the overall living environment for its tenants. Improving internal comfort, increasing fire protection and enhancing exterior aesthetics, EWI with stone wool helps to deliver safe and sound homes that people are proud to live in.
