With the 2026 Housing Executive Awards drawing ever closer, we’re running through exactly what the judges will be looking for in each category. The deadline for submissions is 30th June, and you can find all awards criteria and nomination forms on our website.
The Council of the Year Award is a brand-new addition to the Housing Executive Awards for 2026, recognising the local authorities that have gone above and beyond to address housing need in their communities. While housing associations and other partners are often responsible for delivering new homes, councils play a vital role in shaping local housing strategies, bringing partners together, and creating the conditions needed for successful housing delivery.

With housing demand rising and affordability under pressure across the country, the role of local authorities in housing delivery is as significant as it has ever been. The most effective councils are those that understand the specific needs of their area, work closely with partners, and take a proactive approach to both new development and improving existing stock.
Nominations for Council of the Year should show evidence of:
- How the local authority has evaluated the housing needs of its area and responded accordingly
- Effective collaboration with housing associations and other partners to realise shared goals and improve access to affordable housing
- Data and testimonials highlighting the positive impact the council has had on local housing over the last year
- Why the past 12 months have been a stand-out success, including evidence of targets being met or exceeded
If you know a local authority that has made a real difference to housing provision in its area, head to our website and submit a nomination before the 30th June deadline.
